Assessments

How Will We Know if They Learn It?
The West Bend School District, as required by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, provides a Balanced Assessment System which includes both local assessments and state assessments. As the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction states, well-constructed assessment systems lead to better learning outcomes for students. We also follow several critical beliefs:
- The most valuable assessment is formative and drives the teaching and learning process
- Benchmark or interim assessments (e.g., STAR, MAP) allow teachers and learners to track growth and progress over time
- Summative assessments (e.g. Forward, Aspire, ACT) provide snapshots of learner progress and inform OSD curriculum/instructional strategy choices
- Multiple data points are reviewed when making instructional decisions
- All children are so much more than their assessment scores - we strive to know our learners as individuals and consider the whole child when making instructional decisions
