5th Grade: Preparing for Middle School with Confidence and Curiosity
Fifth grade is an exciting year of growth as students prepare for the transition to middle school. They become more independent thinkers, strengthen their academic skills, and take on increasingly complex learning experiences. Through collaboration, inquiry, and hands-on projects, students build confidence as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and informed citizens while developing the skills they need for future success.

Learning That Prepares Students for What's Next
Fifth grade is about more than mastering academic content—it's about preparing students for the opportunities and responsibilities that come with middle school. Through challenging coursework, collaborative projects, and opportunities to think critically and communicate effectively, students gain the confidence, resilience, and independence needed for continued success.
English Language Arts: Students strengthen reading, writing, and communication skills through literature, informational texts, research, and creative writing while building analytical thinking and presentation skills.
Math: Students develop mathematical confidence through expressions, equations, fractions, decimals, geometry, graphing, and problem-solving, preparing them for more advanced mathematics.
Science: Students investigate Earth, physical, and life sciences through hands-on exploration of space, matter, and living systems while developing scientific inquiry skills.
Social Studies: Students explore the history of North America, the founding of the United States, and the development of our government while building an understanding of citizenship and financial literacy.

Human Growth & Development
The West Bend School District believes that the family plays a critical role in human growth and development education for students. The schools support both parents/guardians and children in their efforts to develop an understanding of human sexuality and family. Instruction in Human Growth and Development is offered to students in grades 4 and 5 and at the secondary level in grades 8-12. Human Growth and Development instruction is guided by Wisconsin State Statute 118.019.
Grades 4 and 5 Human Growth and Development
At the 4th and 5th grade level, there is a three-day introductory unit on the changes students experience during puberty, including a review of behaviors needed to stay healthy; sleep, nutrition, personal hygiene, exercise, safety, grooming, and self-image. Additionally, a unit on the social, emotional, and physical changes that occur as one reaches puberty is presented to separate gender groups, which includes discussion on the structure and function of the reproductive systems and disease prevention, including AIDS, for their gender. Medical professionals participate in the lesson on how the body changes. Parents are invited to attend this session.

Letters are sent to families of students in the 4th, 5th, and 8th grades from the school before the start of the unit.
